AGRICULTURE: Bio-energy projects receive grants worth C$5 million
(AlbertaIndex, April 16) --- The Alberta government will award grants totalling C$5 million to 14 renewable energy projects to support the development and expansion of bio-energy facilities and technology.

The grants are a part of the province’s Nine-Point Bio-Energy Plan, which helps support the integration of bio-fuels, bio-diesel and biomass generated power with traditional energy sources.

Last year, the government committed C$239 million over five years to the plan to help build a viable market for bio-energy in the province and encourage further private investment.
“Part of my mandate from the Premier is the development of an energy strategy that includes renewable energy,” said Mel Knight, Minister of Energy. “Bio-energy offers an exciting opportunity for our province and the government of Alberta is committed to taking a role to help develop it.”
A total of 19 grants have been issued under the Bio-refining Commercialization and Market Development Program and the Bio-energy Infrastructure Development Program. The funding will see the development of various facilities throughout the province producing various bio-fuels, including bio-diesel and ethanol, as well as launching studies to assess the long-term sustainability of the bio-energy marketplace in Alberta.
The funding is drawn from the two programs’ 2006-07 budget allocations. Applications for grant funding for the 2007-08 year are now being accepted.
