(AlbertaInxdex, September 17, Wednesday) --- Alberta has launched a new website, www.takingitglobal.org/themes/udhr60/, to inform Canadians on human rights issues. The site has been developed by the Canadian Association of Statutory Human Rights Agencies (CASHRA), of which the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission is a member, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Targeted at those between the ages of 15 and 35, the interactive site aims to encourage learning and dialogue about human rights issues affecting Canadians. “We are delighted to have played a lead role in developing this partnership project. The website is an important tool to engage youth in building a human rights culture,” said Brenda Scragg, acting Chief Commissioner of the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission. “Essential elements of a discrimination-free society are public awareness and education. The more each of us knows about human rights, the better equipped we are to decide what we each want to do to make a difference.” “The ideal of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a light for all people. Human rights activists are the sparks that keep the torch of that ideal burning. How brightly that light burns in the future depends on today’s youth, with their talent, creativity, intelligence and optimism,” said Mary Pat Short, President of CASHRA. “It is our hope that this website will feed the flames of their knowledge, passion and commitment, and they will carry the torch of human rights courageously and help make the world a better place for all people.” CASHRA provided funds to develop the site. CASHRA is the national association of Canada’s government agencies charged with administering federal, provincial and territorial human rights legislation. The website was developed in conjunction with TakingITGlobal and the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights. |
