(AlbertaIndex, August 7, Thursday) --- Two scholars will each receive the $10,000 Alberta Award for the Study of Canadian Human Rights and Multiculturalism scholarship enabling them to undertake research to assist teachers working with diverse student populations.
Margaret Dobson, a University of Calgary PhD student in the department of education, will explore the role that culture plays in the transition and success of Aboriginal students in post-secondary education. Her study will help instructors and students understand the role cultures play in developing effective learning processes. This is the first year that the scholarship has been awarded to both a master’s and a doctoral student. The intent of the scholarship is to help develop expertise about effective ways to reduce discrimination and to support the full participation of Albertans in all aspects of life. The award was established by the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund Advisory Committee. The committee, chaired by Thomas Lukaszuk, MLA for Edmonton-Castle Downs, provides advice to the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit on the use of the fund. Advanced Education and Technology, through Alberta Scholarship Programs, administers the scholarship. “I’m pleased that the government of Alberta can assist these students in their efforts to build skills and resources that will make it easier for all Albertans to have an equal opportunity for learning,” said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. “Research like this will help us develop the knowledge and skills we need to ensure everyone has a chance to work toward their full potential.” “Both these programs of research are examples of the relevant and applicable projects we’re supporting within Alberta’s post-secondary community,” said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Doug Horner. "We’'re proud that students in the province are accessing the support they need to help build a stronger more skilled Alberta. In fact, more than 41,000 students in Alberta’s advanced learning system will receive $77 million in Alberta government scholarships over the next year alone.” |
