ECONOMY: Population continues to expand on strong inward migration, up 3.3% year-on-year
(AlbertaIndex, April 9) --- Alberta’s strong economy continues to be a draw for migrants who boosted the province’s population by 0.65% to 3,435,511 people on New Year’s Day from October 1 2006.
On a year-on-year basis, Alberta’s population grew by 3.3% or by 108,812 people, said Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry.

Alberta’s growth rate led all other provinces and was four times higher than the Canadian increase of 0.14%. Net interprovincial migration was 11,813 and accounted for more than half of this increase.
The main sources of net interprovincial migration were Ontario at 7,893 and Quebec at 1,859.
Alberta accounted for 33.1% of the national increase in population. Canada’s population rose by 1% to 32,777,304. On a calendar year basis, record high net inter provincial migration of 63,284 and the highest net international migration of 22,971 since at least 1957 led to the phenomenal growth in Alberta’s population in 2006.
