TECHNOLOGY: Premier leads delegation to California on high-tech mission
(AlbertaIndex, June 17, Tuesday) --- Premier Ed Stelmach is leading a delegation to introduce Alberta’s technology action plan to A-list companies in California this week.
During the four-day mission, Stelmach and Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, will introduce Alberta’s recently announced technology commercialization action plan.

The delegation will also meet with Alberta expatriate entrepreneurs who now own, work in, or invest in, California-based technology enterprises.

The province regards these individuals as an important source of market information and contacts, whose experiences can help other Alberta companies gain a stake in California’s technology sector. They are also well-positioned to act as ambassadors for, or investors in, Alberta.

Stelmach will open the Alberta Pavilion at BIO 2008, North America’s largest biotechnology conference and trade show. BIO 2008 will attract more than 22,000 delegates from more than 60 countries.

Announcements relating to partnered projects in medical technology, meetings with influential technology investors and executives from multinational companies, and networking events will also be on the agenda.

“California is a great place to tell Alberta’s technology commercialization story to the global marketplace,” said Premier Stelmach. “By attending world-class events like BIO 2008 in San Diego, we’re putting Alberta in the right place at the right time, positioning our province as a leader in technology.”

Horner said: “Alberta’s action plan, Bringing Technology to Market is all about Alberta’s bright, diverse economic future, so it’s critical that Alberta build on its valuable ties to California’s fast-moving technology and venture capital sectors.”

Some of the world’s most innovative companies are headquartered in California, which is home to Silicon Valley and the ‘Tech Coast’. The state is one of the world’s top 10 economies generating $1.5 trillion per year, and is also a leading jurisdiction in technology and environmental policy and legislation.

Alberta’s action plan, launched by Premier Stelmach on June 11, aims to develop the province as a hotbed for technology entrepreneurship.
