ECONOMY: Alberta to sign technology trade agreements with China

(AlbertaIndex, May 26, Monday) --- Alberta has announced it is signing three agreements with the governments of Hong Kong and China’s Guangdong province to promote technology trade ties with China’s fast growing economy.
The Alberta government said the agreements will pave the way for stronger company collaboration on projects including commercialization of high-tech health-related solutions. Its officials are finalizing two Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) in Hong Kong between Advanced Education and Technology (AET) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park as well as AET and the Hong Kong Productivity Council.

The MOU will help launch projects worth $1.5 million.

The first involves Alberta’s BioNeutra, the University of Alberta, and the China University of Technology (Guangdong) on a project to investigate competitive manufacturing processes for BioNeutra’s proprietary, natural-sourced sweetener. The product provides health benefits and has potential for use in a great variety of food products.

A second project will see Alberta’s TRLabs collaborate with the Shenzhen Institute of Technology on a research project to develop a novel portable health monitoring unit to be piloted in rural areas.

“These two organizations, located in one of the world’s most influential economic hubs, offer many resources to Alberta companies,” said Doug Horner, AET Minister. “These agreements will help connect companies in both countries with sources of market intelligence, investment capital and infrastructure so they can enter global markets.”

A third MOU will be signed between Alberta and Guangdong Province.

“Guangdong, like Alberta, is investing to create a knowledge-based economy,” said Horner. “Guangdong is also the manufacturing heartland of China, so it represents a great place for Alberta companies to forge partnerships, produce technology products and provide technology-based solutions.”
