(AlbertaIndex, May 22, Thursday) --- Alberta’s highways and roads were safer over the recent Victoria Day long weekend as a result of diligent work by law enforcers. The Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol cracked down on unsafe driving, and laid more than 2,800 charges across the province between Friday, May 16 and Monday, May 19. This included 1,981 speeding violations, 58 seatbelt infractions, 22 child restraint infractions, and 785 other violations. Currently there are 99 traffic sheriffs on the roads. By this summer, there will be 105 patrolling Alberta highways. The unit was created in September 2006 to help make Alberta’s roadways safer. Since its inception, sheriffs have issued 117,922 violations, attended 390 collision scenes, and helped remove 464 suspected impaired drivers from the road. Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death and injury among Alberta’s youth. Research shows one in every five new drivers is involved in a collision in their first two years of driving. During the month of May, sheriffs and their road safety partners are focusing their safety message on young drivers.
