ECONOMY: Sheard to lead Edmonton capital region board in long-term planning
(AlbertaIndex, March 26, Wednesday) --- Christopher Sheard has been named interim chair of the board to lead the long-term planning for the Edmonton region covering 25 municipalities over the next 20 to 50 years.

The board consists of mayors and reeves from the 25 municipalities in the capital region. The board’s main priorities are creating a long-range plan on regional land use and infrastructure such as roads and transit, developing an electronic system to share information, and determining the quantity and location of affordable housing.

Secondary priorities include planning and monitoring water and waste management, policing, emergency services, social services, recreation and economic development.

The plan is to be developed by 2010. The Alberta government will provide start-up funding and ongoing support to the board.
A lawyer, businessman and community leader, Sheard had a 25-year career in the natural gas and electricity industries, primarily as a senior executive in the ATCO group of companies. He now divides his time between consulting in the field of regulatory policy, and community and charitable activities.

Sheard is currently the president of the Citadel Theatre and has served as the vice-chair of the Canadian Gas Association, national treasurer of the Arthritis Society, executive in residence at the University Of Alberta School Of Business, and board chair of the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation.

In naming Sheard to the job, Premier Ed Stelmach said: “This appointment furthers my commitment to bring regional planning to a new level that meets the Capital Region’s needs – now and into the future.

“Mr Sheard is very familiar with the complex issues facing the capital region and his experience in governance and planning will help the board move the regional plan forward.”
