HOUSING: Association wants politicians to protect housing affordability
(AlbertaIndex, March 3, Monday) --- The Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) wants politicians and local governments to protect housing affordability in Alberta by providing “appropriate” infrastructure funding support and holding the line on what municipalities are allowed to charge on the cost of housing.
It has asked for provincial sustained funding to build and upgrade infrastructure, limit government imposed costs on housing to those directly related to the neighbourhood, and stop implementing property transfer taxes or other new taxation authority.

Last week, the association issued a statement accusing municipal leaders of being “relentless in their pursuit of new and increased fees charged to new home buyers.”

It said that builders and developers need to know that they will not face constant increases in development cost charges by cities.

It added: “They need to know they will only pay municipal charges directly related to their project. New home buyers should not have to pay for city wide infrastructure. There are other ways it can be funded without eroding housing affordability. Find out how the three biggest parties are responding to this issue in the Alberta election.”

The association said the province’s three main parties, which face a provincial election today, can do more to address the issue.
