ECONOMY: Calgary aims to boost business, trade ties with the Middle East

(AlbertaIndex, February 28, Thursday) --- Calgary city wants to expand trade and investment ties with the Middle East.

That’s the message coming from Calgary Economic Development (CED) which is organizing a trade delegation to meet with the business leaders of the oil-rich capital cities of Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Dubai from March 1 to 6.

The mission will focus on clean energy, capital projects and real estate investment. Capital projects that offer significant investment potential and other private investment opportunities in Calgary will be presented to Middle Eastern companies.

The delegation will also highlight Calgary’s real estate investment potential and showcase the city as a superior investment destination.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier will be travelling with representatives from several Calgary energy and real estate companies to meet with business leaders in Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Dubai from March 1- 6, 2008.

“This mission brings together business leaders from two of the most dynamic economies in the world,” said Mayor Bronconnier. “It provides the opportunity to develop much needed partnerships in the real estate, airline and energy sectors. To stay competitive, Calgary needs to be seen as an international destination for people and business.”

“We will be taking several Calgary real estate and energy companies with us on this mission. We are confident that the similarities between Calgary and the Middle East present many outstanding opportunities for business partnerships and trade development,” said Bruce Graham, President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development, who will be accompanied by Richard Pootmans and Saad Bashir, business development managers for the real estate and energy sectors.
