EDUCATION: Province invests more than $97 million in U of C capital projects
(AlbertaIndex, January 25, Friday) --- The Alberta government has announced it will invest $97.1 million to help complete a new digital library and renew mechanical and infrastructure systems at the University of Calgary.
        The investment includes:

        -    $37.5 million for the Taylor Family Digital Library project as part of the integrated campus library system. The funding matches the $25-million donation made by Don and Ruth Taylor of Calgary in 2006 and expands on the previous $113 million investment by the Alberta government in the virtual project which includes building a high density library storage facility.
        -    $42.5 million to upgrade the Health Sciences Centre’s mechanical and ventilation systems; and
        -    $17.1 million to replace, repair and upgrade the roofs of multiple buildings, including Engineering Block A and D, Education Block and Education Tower, Kinesiology A, Science B and Craigie Hall.

“This is a concrete example of our long-term plan for post-secondary institutions and the next generation economy,” said Premier Ed Stelmach.  “We have an internationally recognized facility here that is the pride of this city.  Today, we are making it stronger through wise investments that provide the necessary infrastructure for students and faculty.”

In 2007, as part of its capital investment plan, Alberta provided $260 million toward the university’s new Energy. Environment. Experiential Learning Centre which will house the Institute of Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy.

“Our capital plan is not just about new buildings,” added the Premier.  “It’s about creating a solid infrastructure for the future.”

“Whether we’re investing in leading-edge new facilities or renewing existing infrastructure, we’re committed to making Alberta’s advanced education system better every day,” said Doug Horner, Minister of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology.  “Our students deserve the best, the safest and the most modern facilities.”

“The matching funding from the government of Alberta will ensure that our students and our community have access to the most sophisticated information resources in the country,” said University of Calgary President, Harvey Weingarten. “The additional funding will further serve to renew our campus and ensure that our facilities are modern and able to support high-quality teaching, learning and research.”
