ECONOMY: Premier’s trade team to focus on energy and agriculture in mission to Washington, D.C.
(AlbertaIndex, January 15, Tuesday) --- Energy and agriculture will be the focus of this week’s mission by a government of Alberta team to Washington, DC, led by Premier Ed Stelmach.
During the January 15 to 18 mission, Stelmach will lead Alberta’s participation in a US Energy Association luncheon, a forum on energy security, meetings with high-level US energy and agriculture representatives, and briefings for US Members of Congress and staff on energy and trade investment opportunities between the US and Alberta.

Joining Premier Stelmach is George Groeneveld, Minister of Agriculture and Food, and Ted Morton, Minister of Sustainable Resource Development.

Groeneveld will focus on advancing Alberta’s agricultural trade interests and strengthening Alberta’s relationships with key US agricultural decision makers. He will also advocate food safety import regimes and other border measures that do not impede cross-border trade.

Morton will meet with US forestry officials to discuss approaches to common challenges including mountain pine beetle, fire management and the state of the forestry industry. He will also join the Premier on meetings with US energy representatives, focusing on energy-related land use.

The US is Alberta’s largest trade partner. Almost 90 per cent of all Alberta exports, worth about $74 billion, go to the US annually. Of Alberta’s 25 top trading partners, 21 are US states.

“Alberta is a major, secure and reliable supplier to the United States in a variety of key areas and it is important for us to be on the ground in Washington DC,” said Stelmach. “We will take the message forward that as responsible stewards of the environment we are committed to greening our growth while we work to expand trade and investment opportunities.”
