(AlbertaIndex, January 11, Friday) --- Canada’s provincial Premiers and territorial leaders are expected to focus on economic issues when they and Prime Minister Stephen Harper gather for a First Ministers’ Meeting in Ottawa today. Premier Ed Stelmach said he will ensure Alberta’s interests are promoted and protected on a variety of issues, including trade, labour market growth and the economy. While Alberta’s economy has fared well, the strong Canadian dollar has proved to be a drag on exports including agricultural and forest products. Stelmach will remind Premiers and the Prime Minister that Alberta’s strong economic growth has benefited the federal government and all areas of Canada. He will also emphasize that Alberta continues to develop its energy reserves in an environmentally responsible manner. “The First Ministers’ Meeting is an important opportunity to raise issues of importance to Albertans,” said Stelmach. “I will continue to voice Alberta’s support for improved and more open trade between provinces and territories within Canada as a way to make our country more competitive internationally.” |
