| CALGARY: City lays out ambitious 10-year development plan |

(AlbertaIndex, January 10, Thursday) --- Calgary City has laid out a 10-year plan to become a global city and the nation’s energy hub with a powerful economy, a thriving intellectual and cultural scene and a high standard of living. The grand vision was spelt out in the new 10-year Economic Development Strategy presented to a City Council Standing Policy Committee. It identifies three key goals focusing on developing People and Community, Business and Enterprise and International Reach. Some of its most notable concrete proposals call for the construction of a high-speed rail link between Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray, a Calgary ring road and a new downtown University of Calgary campus to be located in the East Village near City Hall. The economic plan, initiated by Mayor Dave Bronconnier and produced by a 17-member team, was unveiled yesterday by Bronconnier, Mauro Meneghetti, chair of the Community Steering Team and Adam Legge, Project Manager. The team members included representatives from the private sector, government and the four City-funded agencies: Calgary Economic Development, Tourism Calgary, Calgary Technologies Inc and the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre. Bronconnier said: “Today we enjoy the strongest economy in Canada and one of the strongest in the world. Ensuring that prosperity in the future means making strategic investments in our community which will keep us a competitive and attractive place for business and people.” |
