(AlbertaIndex, December 31, Monday) --- Ed Stelmach will focus on promoting energy and agriculture ties with the US when he visits Washington, D.C. next month in his first international mission as Alberta’s Premier. During his visit on January 15-18, the Premier will meet with US energy industry representatives, participate in energy and food safety forums and meet with members of Congress and senior administration officials on issues of mutual interest. Specifically, he will focus on the following: • provide an outlook for oil and natural gas production and an overview of the new royalty framework; • demonstrate Alberta’s commitment to environmental responsibility in developing energy resources; • show how Alberta is proactively managing the pressures associated with unprecedented economic growth in the province; and, • reinforce Alberta’s commitment to food safety and strengthened agricultural ties with the U.S. “I’ll emphasize to political and business leaders that Alberta has the continued commitment and the capacity to be a secure, reliable, growing and environmentally responsible supplier of both food and energy to the US,” said Stelmach. The US is Alberta’s single largest export market. In 2006, the US bought $74 billion of Alberta’s products or almost 90 per cent of the province’s total exports. Of Alberta’s 25 top trading partners, 21 are American states. |
