ENERGY: EUB approves ATCO natural gas rate increases for 2008
(AlbertaIndex, December 26, Wednesday) --- Customers of ATCO Gas will have to pay more for their natural gas from January 1 after the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) approved the company’s application for a rate increase.
Although rate changes for individual customers will depend on usage, the EUB said total charges for a customer using 120 gigajoule (GJ) per year in ATCO’s northern service territory will increase $1.25 per month while a similar customer in the southern territory will increase 8 cents per month.

This excludes the impact of any changes to the energy commodity portion of the bill for regulated customers, which changes each month.

In issuing its approvals in Decisions 2007-092 and 2007-105, EUB said ATCO Gas had requested the increase to keep up with increasing costs for providing services. ATCO Gas had requested increases of $26.3 million in the North and $17.2 million in the South.

The EUB said it approved half the requested increase on an interim basis. Rate riders due to expire December 31, 2007 in combination with new riders for 2008 contributed to the differences in increases between the North and South. The final review of this requested rate increase will take place during 2008.

Taking effect at the same time is a cost recovery associated with the ATCO Gas 2005-2007 General Rate Application, which will increase the fixed charge for a customer in the ATCO Gas (North) service territory by $0.86 per month for six months. Charges for a similar customer in the ATCO Gas (South) service territory will increase by $0.72 per month for six months.

The public may call the EUB’s Utilities Concerns Line at (780) 427-4903 or toll-free 310-0000 to seek clarification.

The EUB regulates investor-owned natural gas, electric, and water utilities to ensure that customers receive safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates, and ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta’s resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
