CITY: New board to help 25 municipalities around Edmonton plan and coordinate developments
(AlbertaIndex, December 20, Thursday) --- Premier Ed Stelmach has accepted most of the recommendations from a report to improve the planning and coordination of the 25 municipalities around Edmonton city.  A new regional board has been formed to start building a regional plan.
The action follows Stelmach’s December 14 meeting with municipal leaders to consider the findings and recommendations of the report, called Working Together – Report and Recommendations of the Capital Region Integrated Growth Management Plan Project Team.

The board will take a long-range regional perspective on key infrastructure such as land use, roads and transit.

“The construction of the Anthony Henday ring road is a prime example of municipal and provincial cooperation that benefits everyone,” said Stelmach. “We’ve talked for many years about improved planning for the infrastructure and services that Capital region residents need, and now it’s time for action.”

Recognizing the province’s leadership role in regional planning, the Premier also pledged action on items such as sharing a long-term transportation plan with municipalities, enforcing use of utility corridors, as well as continuing work on housing, workforce challenges and environment standards.

He said: “The regional plan will be subject to provincial approval, and we’ll ensure that the interests of all residents of the region are protected. There’s only one boss – Capital region residents – and they expect governments to preserve the quality of life they’ve worked so hard to attain.”
