LABOUR: Small business, older workers form ‘valuable partnership’ says business group
(AlbertaIndex, December 12, Wednesday) --- Amid Alberta’s economic boom, small businesses are struggling to find help while older workers expect and want to continue working. Therein, lies a valuable partnership that meets the needs of both groups, says a new study by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).
The study reveals that almost half of small businesses in Alberta employ at least one older worker over the age of 60.

Small business owners are quick to celebrate the important contributions older workers make to their firms.

“We would hire even more older workers, if available. They are reliable and have a great work ethic,” said Brent Schwabe, owner of Superior Mushrooms Inc in Ardrossan.

When asked what positive attributes older workers bring to the workplace, small business owners in Alberta overwhelmingly point to their strong work ethic, experience and qualifications, and loyalty.

“Small business owners are doing what they can to attract and retain older workers. Now it is time to explore what governments can do to help, particularly with respect to tax and pension issues,” said Janine Halbesma, senior policy analyst and report co-author.

The province’s labour shortage is now considered the biggest threat to the viability of most small businesses. The study found that small businesses are making extra efforts to attract and retain older workers.
