LABOUR: Government, industry award training scholarships to 232 apprentices
(AlbertaIndex, December 5, Wednesday) --- The Alberta government and industry have awarded the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training scholarship valued at $1,000 each to a record 232 apprentices, according to the Advanced Education and Technology Ministry.

Apprentices from 38 of the 50 trades received the scholarships, including a record 30 women and 10 Aboriginal people.

The awards recognize apprentices and trainees who have demonstrated excellence in their trade or designated occupation, and encourage them to complete their training programs. The awards are available to all registered Alberta apprentices and trainees.

“These scholarships are an outstanding way for industry to contribute to rewarding learners for their hard work and dedication,” said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “This tremendous support will help Alberta’s promising apprentices and trainees continue along a path of success.”

The scholarship program is funded by contributions from industry and the Alberta government’s Access to the Future Fund. The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Scholarship Endowment Fund now exceeds $4.4 million.

“To receive a scholarship, apprentices and trainees must demonstrate a high standard of academic excellence and distinguish themselves during on-the-job training with their employers. It’s a very competitive process,” said Brian Bickley, Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board Chair.

“Alberta has one of the strongest apprenticeship systems in the world. We are very fortunate to have the support of industry and government so the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board could support 232 apprentices this year.”

Applications for 2008 scholarships will be available in the spring.
