(AlbertaIndex, November 8, Thursday) --- Lethbridge College could add up to 1,300 additional student spaces in its trade and industrial training programs as a result of the Alberta government’s decision to invest $8.5 million to modernize its trades facility. An additional $2.2 million will be spent on enhancing the college’s safety and emergency response system. Built in the 1960s, the trades wing was last upgraded in the 1980s. Trades programs operating in the wing include welding, electrical, automotive services, and agricultural and heavy equipment technician. The $2.2 million upgrade to the safety and emergency response system will include installing a new fire alarm system that connects to an overall upgraded campus security system. “This financial boost to Lethbridge College is a boost to building a stronger Alberta,” said Premier Ed Stelmach. “This investment directly increases the province’s ability to train apprentices and in turn, helps meet the needs of Alberta’s employers, enhancing our overall economy and creating the next wave of opportunity for Albertans.” “The contribution Lethbridge College has made to building Alberta’s knowledge-based economy and enhancing its community over the last 50 years is invaluable,” said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “It’s critical that as a province we continue to invest in our post-secondary institutions and foster this standard of excellence as exemplified by Lethbridge College.” |
