LABOUR: Courts order two Alberta companies to pay $180,500 for injuries to workers

(AlbertaIndex, September 4, Tuesday) --- The Albertan courts have ordered Churchill Industrial Group Ltd and Kal Tire to pay a total of $180,500 in connection with the injuries of workers in two separate incidents. Of the judgments, $95,000 will benefit a not-for-profit agency, said the province’s Employment, Immigration and Industry agency.

The judgment against Churchill Industrial Group Ltd results from a provincial government investigation into a November 14, 2004 incident near Bruderheim, northeast of Edmonton. A manned forklift ran over the lower part of a worker’s leg, which resulted in amputation.
Of the $100,000 penalty, $95,000 will benefit the Threads of Life Workplace Tragedy Family Support Association by creating a family support program for victims and their families of workplace injuries and fatalities in Alberta.
The judgment against Kal Tire results from a provincial government investigation into a November 26, 2003 incident in Edmonton, in which a worker was seriously injured when his arms were pulled into a rubber mill’s rollers while it was still operating.
The $80,500 penalty includes a $10,500 victim fine surcharge, designed to assist the funding of programming for victims of crime.
Employment, Immigration and Industry Alberta said employers are responsible to ensure proper procedures are in place so employees are working in a safe environment. The maximum penalty for a first offence under the Occupational Health and Safety Act is $500,000 and/or six months in prison for each charge.
