TRANSPORTATION: Calgary receives 15 of 40 new CTrain cars

(AlbertaIndex, July 19, Thursday) --- Calgary commuters can look forward to the use of new Ctrain cars after Calgary Transit took delivery of the first 15 of 40 new cars yesterday.

The new cars raises the capacity of Calgary’s CTrain system by more than 30% and will allow CTrain frequency to increase to every three minutes from every five minutes during peak periods.

The unveiling of the new cars was celebrated at a simple ceremony attended by Diane Ablonczy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and MP for Calgary (Nose Hill), Minister Greg Melchin Minister of Seniors and Community Supports, and MLA for Calgary-North West, and Mayor Dave Bronconnier.
The $158 million investment was made possible by funding contributions from the Federal government, the province of Alberta, and the city of Calgary.
Ms Ablonczy, on behalf of Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, said: “This contribution through the federal gas tax fund will help Calgary meet its transit infrastructure needs, while supporting our government’s commitment to providing Canadians with a better environment, including cleaner air, and an improved quality of life.”
Minister Melchin said the provincial government is committed to ensuring Calgary and other Alberta municipalities can effectively manage their growth.
“This boost to public transportation will help address some of the challenges posed by Calgary’s growth,” said Minister Melchin.
“This funding partnership with the provincial and federal governments will assist in delivering improved quality of life for Calgarians,” said Mayor Bronconnier. “The additional 40 CTrain cars will mean more trains, more often and provide more room and comfort for Calgary Transit customers.”
The new cars will also help service the northeast extension of the LRT which will open this fall, and the northwest LRT extension scheduled to open in 2008.
Through the federal Gas Tax Fund, the City of Calgary will receive more than $140 million over five years for environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure projects. The City of Calgary has dedicated $24 million of this amount to the new CTrain cars in addition to the $133.5 million of provincial funding.
