ECONOMY: Province’s international offices to undergo performance review

(AlbertaIndex, July 13, Friday) --- The Alberta government will review the performance and services of its 10 international offices to ascertain if they are meeting the province’s public and private sector goals.

Last year, the international offices facilitated more than 1,256 business introductions, involving 344 missions and delegations from Alberta and 181 missions and delegations to Alberta.

Alberta’s international offices are located in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, the UK and the US. The tenth office is located in Beijing and is a partnership between the government of Alberta and the China National Petroleum Corporation.
Pearl Calahasen, MLA for Lesser Slave Lake, is chairing the Alberta Foreign Offices Review Committee. As part of the review, she will travel to London, England and Munich and Berlin, Germany between July 14 and July 22 to meet with office staff, Canadian Embassy officials, and British and German stakeholders.
She told AlbertaIndex that the committee’s other three members will be visiting the other offices over the next two months.
The visits will assist the committee to prepare its final report, which is due to the Minister by fall 2007. It has been more than 10 years since Alberta’s international offices were reviewed.
Ms Calahasen’s trip is expected to cost $19,500 including meals, accommodation and travel.
“Alberta is an export powerhouse with more than $81 billion in exports last year,” said Guy Boutilier, Minister of International, Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Relations who established the review team.
“This review will ensure our trade offices are in the right international markets and are optimizing opportunities for Alberta’s public and private sectors.”
