(AlbertaIndex, July 5, Thursday) --- Alberta has boosted its investment in the education of its young by more than 35% to $851 million. The additional $227 million boost to the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund was announced by Premier Ed Stelmach and Advanced Education and Technology Minister Doug Horner. “Education is the key to a successful future,” said Premier Stelmach. “We want to make sure as many Albertans as possible can take advantage of learning opportunities at the many excellent educational facilities across Alberta.”This fiscal year, a record $57 million in overall scholarship funding will support more than 33,000 students in Alberta. Interest from this additional money will allow scholarship spending to grow by about $10 million in 2008-09. The program provides annual scholarships to Alberta high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Alberta provides more scholarship funding per capita than any other province. More than 50 different scholarships are available to Alberta students. “Our scholarship, bursary and grant programs help students graduate with debt levels that are among the lowest in the country,” said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Doug Horner. “Our province continues to lead the country in terms of student supports, which is translating into academic success and a bright future for Alberta.” The Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund was introduced with a $100-million investment in 1981. The four core scholarships within the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund include the Rutherford Scholarships for High School Achievement, the Louise McKinney Post-Secondary Scholarships, the Sir James Lougheed Awards of Distinction and the Ralph Steinhauer Awards of Distinction. |
