(AlbertaIndex, July 5, Thursday) --- The Alberta government said it is teaming up with IBM and the University of Alberta to help organizations use information technology to improve service delivery and gain a competitive advantage in the business world. The $484,000 cyber-infrastructure research project, referred to as ‘services science’ is being undertaken at the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) in Edmonton. He said: “Services science is the focal point of this research project and cyber-infrastructure is the high-tech equivalent of highways and pipelines - it is critical to the exchange of today's hottest commodity, information. “This project has potential for commercial success and will help Alberta develop expertise for applications in nanotechnology, life sciences technology, and information technology, to support economic diversification.” The IBM CAS opened in 2005 as a collaborative effort between the government of Alberta, IBM and the University of Alberta. The project will build on the centre’s current focus areas of machine learning, nanotechnology, biological simulation and services science. “CAS Alberta is a testament to IBM's commitment to driving collaborative research among academia, government and industry,” said Bernie Kollman, IBM’s vice president for Public Sector Alberta. “This project will help Alberta-based businesses find new ways to gain value from the latest information technology, and enables university students to develop technical skills required for success in their careers.” Paul Sorenson, University of Alberta Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President of Information Technology, said: “This exciting research project is the beginning of a new collaboration involving the University of Alberta and IBM in the emerging discipline of services science. It aligns very well with the province’s cyber-infrastructure investment. The university is committed to its growing interdisciplinary strength in services science.” The Alberta government will contribute $100,000, while IBM Canada will contribute $184,000 and the University of Alberta $83,000.
