| PEOPLE: Legal Aid Alberta names Jacquie Schaffter as its new President and CEO |

(AlbertaIndex, June 25, Monday) --- Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) said it has promoted senior counsel Jacquie Schaffter to President and CEO effective August 1, 2007. After conducting a nationwide search, LAA’s board of directors said it has chosen an excellent leader to guide Legal Aid Alberta’s efforts in providing innovative and cost effective legal services for people in need throughout the province.Before joining LAA, she was a partner in a full service law firm with emphasis in her practice on family law, wills and estates, and dependent adult work. Her extensive community involvement includes her present position as a member of the board of St. Mary's Hospital Foundation. She previously served for six years as an elected school trustee for the city of Camrose in the Battle River Regional School District, serving as vice chairman for two years. Ms Schaffter also served as a board member for the Ribstone (East Central) Child and Family Services Authority. The LAA board said it is confident that under Ms Schaffter’s leadership, LAA will continue to be a leader amongst legal aid organizations in providing quality legal services to improve access to justice for Albertans in need. Legal Aid in Alberta was officially established on July 1, 1970 by an agreement between the Law Society of Alberta and the provincial Attorney General to deal with both criminal and civil matters. Its mission is to provide innovative and cost effective legal services for people in need throughout Alberta. |
