ECONOMY: Alberta among Canada's growth leaders, but moderation lies ahead, says RBC Bank

          (AlbertaIndex, April 3) --- While Alberta's economy is coming off the high growth levels of 2006, the province remains among the country's growth leaders with expected growth of 3.6 per cent in 2007 and 3.2 per cent in 2008, according to a provincial economic outlook released by RBC.

 
ENERGY: EUB states decision on legal entitlement of coalbed methane
        (AlbertaIndex, April 2) --- The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has issued Decision 2007 - 024  which reviewed EUB coalbed methane (CBM) licenses held by Bearspaw Petroleum Ltd, Devon Canada Corporation and Fairborne Energy Ltd in the Clive, Ewing Lake, Stettler, and Wimborne Fields and concluded the companies are entitled to develop the resource under EUB regulations.

        (AlbertaIndex, April 2) --- At last week’s annual meeting of the Credit Union Central Alberta in Calgary, the Alberta credit union system celebrated another record year of financial and operational results.
 
HEALTH: Restaurant industry wants national action on trans fat
        (AlbertaIndex, March 30) --- The Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA) has called on the Calgary Health Region to lobby Ottawa to reduce the level of trans fat in the country’s food supply. It said Ottawa should adopt recommendations by the Federal Trans Fat Task Force in recognizing the extent of trans fat content in Canadian foods, and to act to reduce it.
 
ENERGY: Calgary posts regulated electricity rate for April 2007

        (AlbertaIndex, March 30) --- Calgary households and small businesses that have not signed up for an energy plan with a retail supplier will pay the Regulated Rate Option (RRO) of 8.34 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) effective April 1, said energy supplier ENMAX Power Corporation. The RRO is the default option when the consumer does not make a choice for an energy plan.

 
ECONOMY: Koreans to visit Alberta in record numbers this summer

        (AlbertaIndex, March 29) --- As many as 8,400 Korean travellers will be visiting Alberta this summer as part of a new charter program negotiated by Travel Alberta and the Calgary Airport Authority, said the Alberta Government.
        Korean Air will fly Boeing 777-200 aircraft three times a week, July 1 until September 2, between Seoul and Calgary. Each flight will carry up to 301 passengers.

 
ENERGY: Calgary-based NGX poised for global role in ICE, TXS tie-up
        (AlbertaIndex, March 28) --- Calgary-based Natural Gas Exchange Inc (NGX) will have a link to the world energy markets with the tie-up between parent TSX Group and the global giant IntercontintenalExchange (ICE) Inc. NGX is the TSX’s clearinghouse subsidiary for physical settlement of North American natural gas and Canadian electricity contracts.
 
ECONOMY: New provincial corporation to manage Alberta’s investments

        (AlbertaIndex, March 26) --- The Alberta government has passed a new law to create a corporation to manage the province’s investments. The newly named Alberta Investment Management Corporation will have improved organizational governance, increased flexibility and opportunities for greater investment returns for Alberta’s savings, public sector pensions, endowments and other funds.

 
WATER: Alberta, Northwest Territories announce plan to protect trans-boundary water resources

        (AlbertaIndex, March 23) --- Alberta and the Northwest Territories have announced progress in their development of a bilateral agreement that will ensure the integrity of water flowing downstream from Alberta into the Northwest Territories.

 
AGRICULTURE: Farmers to get another C$70 million in interim assistance for disaster years

        (AlbertaIndex, March 23) --- Alberta will pay out an additional C$70 million to farmers as supplementary support under the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) program. This Alberta-only initiative is expected to address ongoing concerns about the effects of back-to-back disasters in agriculture.
