ECONOMY: Forecast for another $8.5 billion surplus, but dark clouds loom

(AlbertaIndex, August 28, Thursday) --- Alberta is forecasting another large surplus of $8.5 billion in 2008-09, but unlike three years ago, the province has to worry about rising costs, climate change and the possibility of a downward revision if oil and gas prices plunge.

HEALTH: Maple Leaf Foods face class action suit as Alberta investigates deadly disease

(AlbertaIndex, August 27, Wednesday) --- Hundreds of Canadians are filing a class action law suit against Toronto-based Maple Leaf Foods related to the spread of the deadly Listeriosis disease in contaminated meat that has so far killed at least 15 people throughout the country.

ENVIRONMENT: New rules could delay oil sands projects

(AlbertaIndex, August 26, Tuesday) --- Tougher environmental regulations being proposed could hamper the development of oil sands projects in Canada’s Alberta province, French oil giant Total has warned.
